    Description

    Article no.: 9789152789964

The project Observations from a Distance was developed between 2018 and 2021 and has been presented in several international solo shows, starting in Ornamentum Gallery Hudson in New York in 2018.

This is a limited edition publication accounting for the collection, consisting of jewelry made from three materials (acrylic, aluminium and gold), hand-bound in Korean binding.

    From Anna. T Wolgers text:
The very name Karin Johansson has assigned to her project presented in this publication sets the tone for the works emanating from it. Through them, the artist conjures up the image of something distant, something out of reach. It could be about a recollection of something lost, or a memory of something forgotten.

The title, to be sure, also provides a description of the artist’s working method. To see things more clearly, Karin Johansson has stepped outside the objects of her creation. From a distance, structures become visible and one’s intentions with the work begin to take shape. At the heart of observations are impressions – of a situation, a time, and a place. To that extent, Karin Johansson’s pieces can be said to be impressionistic: they have no representational ambition but, rather, assemble impressions into a coherent whole.

In the interest of simplicity and manoeuvrability, Karin Johansson has for this project elected to work with a narrow range of materials and methods, allowing her to adopt a nomadic attitude. The three materials she utilizes in her works here [acrylic, aluminium and gold] were chosen based on their qualities and characteristics such as resilience, elasticity, and particular colour. Carefully controlled, they complement one another and allow the artist to create objects in which the properties of their materials are transformed.
