An inspiring portrait of Matti Klenell’s design practice — where tradition meets innovation in a masterful exploration of glass and form.

    From the publisher:
Matti Klenell's works often grow organically out of previous projects – particularly in glass. He is fascinated by the experience of being an outsider, by travel and encounters with foreign cultures. In that state, he finds a kind of freedom – the freedom of standing outside the expectations of home.

His projects have taken him to leading glassworks in the USA, Czech Republic, Finland, Italy, and Sweden – countries each with their own glassmaking traditions. Every workshop, factory, and glassworks has its own history and techniques, meaning that the production process varies.

Klenell has collected knowledge the way others collect souvenirs, and these insights influence his work. Over time, he has developed a strong sense of where specific works should be produced.

For the exhibition 9 Factory Road, it became clear that the sculptures should be born at the Iittala glassworks in Finland. Iittala has a long-standing tradition of producing demanding art glass through mold-blowing, with works by names such as Alvar Aalto, Tapio Wirkkala, Timo Sarpaneva, and Oiva Toikka. The factory also houses a group of skilled and ambitious master glassblowers.

Klenell emphasizes that the production is marked by close and respectful collaboration – where different professional roles contribute their unique expertise. Without the contributions of the master glassblowers, the works would not be what they are – they would have been different, even if the concept and sketches had remained the same.

The importance of the place became so central that the exhibition was named after the factory's address.
