Minako Masui

A large, impressive survey of Minako Masui's work ”Masui straddles two cultures. The Japanese and the North European. Her artistry serves as a flux between the two, a constant stream which is the only expression encompassing the whole and serves as a cement made up of feelings. It is logical that schism is one of the themes in her pictures, a schism which paradoxically makes itself known in the very homogeneity of her shapes and colours. The graphic sheets are like dark, rushing water with whirlpools plunging towards the depths. And even those pictures depicting fragmentary forms dressing an empty space, even those search for balance in some inner visual focus. The path of intimacy moves thusly inward, leading the artists hand past the seam between the differences and enabling them to remain in an uncontradictory tension. In 1962 she moved to Sweden, where she lives today. Between the years 1984 and 1989 she received her formal arts education at The Graphic School Forum in Malmö, which also is her present hometown. --- Swedish: Minako Masui föddes 1940 i Yokohama, Japan. Som ung drömde hon om att komma till Europa och hamnade, av alla platser, i Landskrona 1962, som utvald bland många studenter inför stadens jubileum året därpå. År 1979 flyttade hon till Malmö, där hon vid sidan av att arbeta som cytodiagnostiker började sin konstnärliga utbildning för den legendariska Bertil Lundberg på Grafikskolan Forum (1984–89). Hennes dagliga arbete på laboratoriet har gett en insikt och en fascination för en mikrokosmisk värld, som ständigt gjort sig påmind i hennes konst. Hennes visuella skicklighet är baserad på en nyfikenhet på traditionella tekniker som mezzotint och torrnål, men också på en lust att experimentera med gränsöverskridande uttryck, inte så sällan i stora format, som även inbegriper det omgivande rummet. Minako Masui har haft en omfattande utställningsverksamhet runt om i världen och deltagit i flera av de internationella grafiktriennalerna, som Krakow, Tokyo och Jyväskylä. Hennes konst är representerad på Nationalmuseum och Moderna Museet i Stockholm, konstmuseerna i Malmö, Göteborg, Norrköping, Uppsala, Västerås och Eskilstuna i Sverige. Dessutom Alvar Aalto Museum, Kuso-no-Mori Museum i Japan, Nationalmuseet i Krakow med flera utländska museer.
