A wonderful broadsheet publication with work by one of our favorite young Swedish painters Leif Engström. This publication of new work accompanies his solo exhibition at ValstaKonst 2023.

In Engström's artistry we are met with motifs where the brutalist landscape of the suburbs ends up in a melancholic encounter together with vegetation and strong coloring, he himself has a great interest especially in the architecture of public housing and welfare. Precisely in that context, the Valsta swimming pool becomes a unique encounter with Engström's art, as the building and its previous activities were part of the public home's idea of a kind of welfare available to everyone. We can see traces in Engström's paintings where inspiration is taken from Japanese visual culture, but also a kind of magical realism, combined with a Nordic pictorial tradition.

I Engströms konstnärskap möts vi av motiv där förortens brutalistiska landskap hamnar i ett melankoliskt möte tillsammans med växtlighet och stark färgsättning, han har själv ett stort intresse särskilt för folkhemmets och välfärdens arkitektur. Just i den kontexten blir Valsta simhall ett unikt möte med Engströms konst, då byggnaden och dess tidigare verksamhet ingick i folkhemmets tanke om en slags välfärd tillgänglig för alla. Vi kan se spår i Engströms målningar där inspiration tagits från japansk bildkultur, men även en slags magisk realism, kombinerad med en nordisk bildtradition.
